Band history written by Peter Zelewski (guitar)

The Allied - Peter ZelewskiFormed in Detroit, towards the end of 1981, by former Negative Approach bassist (and Real Threat fanzine editor) Pete Zelewski, the Allied combined the best elements of Midwest hardcore with English punk and Oi. With their slow aggressive sound, the band were heavily influenced by US bands like The Effigies and Iron Cross and offered an alternative to their thrash/hardcore Midwest counterparts.

The first line-up consisted of Pete Zelewski on guitar, Doug Bashaw on bass, Bud Burcar on drums and Rob Michaels on vocals who joined after the break up of his band Bored Youth. They played a series of local Detroit gigs alongside bands like The Necros and Negative Approach until, after six months, Rob left the band to attend college. Instead of throwing in the towel the band continued with Doug moving over to vocals and a local named Mick joining in on bass. This was the line-up that went on to define the Allied sound and the band built up a dedicated following playing gigs throughout Detroit and further afield in Chicago and Washington DC.

On their visits to Chicago the band hooked up with John Kezdy from The Effigies who persuaded The Allied to release their first single on the Chicago based Ruthless Records label. With John on production, the band recorded six tracks in Chicago for what was to be their debut release. Unfortunately, in early 1983, shortly after the Ruthless recordings, Pete left the band. The three remaining members decided not to carry on and the recordings were never released. Recently a California based label called Grand Theft Audio has expressed an interest in releasing the early Allied recordings which might see the light of day in the future.
